Francis Lovell, I think, had a garniture of Harkom boxlocks for sale recently in their original case. These guns were notable for their lovely fence treatment and I think the locks were gold-washed.

I have one of a set of three 12b's completed in 1896 for a Viscount Grey de Wilton. Interestingly the gun is not numbered as in 1,2,3 etc. Possibly it was removed by a talented engraver after the guns were separated sometime shortly after 1900, but I can find no trace of such a number.

My gun is #156xx.

I could be wrong, but I thought a garnature was a four gun set; four guns sets, whatever they are named, are quite rare.

RC - that Purdey is definitely a best gun. Trying to define a best gun by features will get you into all kinds of exceptions. The concept is no corners cut on design, materials, or workmanship. Also, any Brit master gunmaker could get out a best gun. The trick was getting the commission to make it. Don't get hungup on certain names assuring best guns - Purdey's sold a number of graded SLE's and BLE's that were certainly not best guns. Any maker or retailer could order from Birmingham any original quality grade gun he was willing to pay for. Outworkers capable of best work were well known in the trade and utilized as needed. Very few shops had all the skills in-house.

The Brit gun trade is a long and rich study.

I believe that was a Parker 3 gun cased set available on the gun show circuit a few years back. Does anyone else remember these?

Isn't a garniture 4 guns not 3?

I've already tried matched pairs...to no avail...

Rocketman, the serial number is 130xx... thanks

I have doubles that are nicer than this double, so it's kind of hard to get too excited...but the cased 1908 carbine is just screaming "take me hunting"

That dates it to 1894, RC. You can leave an order with Matched Pairs and you can watch auctions and dealer lists. It is not unlikely that the other two will show up as a pair. A #1 or a #2 is strong evidence that there is a sibbling out there. However, you have to see #3 to know there was a trio.
