I think it is pretty easy to argue that the premier gunmaker in America is Shiloh, in Big Timber, Montana. Of course, they don't make bolt rifles, but if you want the best American rifle making from a semi-custom maker, Shiloh really has to be it, and they only make 2 models. The 1874 and 1877, though in several configurations and many calibers for each. The Sharps rifle is also wholly an American invention, so there is that too.

Hopefully, they turned over a new leaf, but Shiloh had a tendency to be dismissive, after they took ones money. I suppose at least the Cooper dealers answered their phones, and declined to take an order that might not be filled. While I didn't care too much for the buttstock, Ted's link to the 257R look pretty good. There are likely a number of shops who might put a nice blue appearing finish on that stainless bbl.
