I have a friend that I'm trying to help and long guns are not my forte. He has a favorite Win. Model 54 that he'd like restocked with dressed-up wood.

Any recommendations some may have on sources for same would be appreciated. I'd like to point him in the right direction.

You have a legitimate question that I feel is best left to the buyer and seller. My interest is in finding recommendations for a source of quality work at a fair price for all, and any input is appreciated.

I have never purchased one of the finished wood stocks from Boyds (except for laminated target stocks, which are nice). I have seen two which friends bought in the two upgraded wood qualities and they looked very nice. The overall quality was of a well made modern factory stock made from a very nice but not exceptional piece of walnut. The biggest difference is that they are only available with stippling, I believe, and not checkering. Prices seem to be 300-400 with the best wood and finish. This is in the ballpark of a Richards Microfit in a semi-inlet of exceptional wood. However they require fitting, shaping, finishing and checkering. Even the checkering can double the price and the woodwork if you do it yourself is pretty time consuming. They look like a good option to me to get a modern stock that looks good. They are not a restoration but a cost efficient upgrade for a gun that is not highly collectable.
