Soon I’ll have my barreled action (Ruger 77 mk II, 6mm Rem) inlet into a pattern stock, and I’ll start experimenting with fit. When I have the fit just right, I’ll have the pattern stock duplicated into a nice piece of walnut. I feel fairly confident with the forearm shape/length, shape of the pistol grip, comb height, etc., but I know I will need to experiment a lot with castoff and camber. What is the best way to do this? Should I just add and subtract Bondo and wood? Should I attempt stock bending? (My gunsmith said do that outside or my wife will curse the smell and me!). Maybe I should rig some kind of knuckle joint like this (https://shootingsportsman.com/another-try-at-a-try-gun/)? I welcome advice and input from others who have experience with this.

Bondo and a good cabinet makers rasp is how I build my pattern stocks, I glass bed the inletting. You can make changes and test them shortly after the Bondo sets up, low cost, simple and fast.

Larry,

I ordered an off the shelf stock, so to speak, from one of the butt stock reproducers and then added Bondo, and cut and shaped to fit me. I then used this pattern to have a new stock cut with a better grade of wood. The original remains intact and I fit the new to a SxS which I now can break clays. Took some time but made for a nice winter time project. I used Custom Stock and Steel in PA to cut the new stock. Very nice people and very accommodating.

Was down in Vero visiting friends and shot at both the Indian river range in Sebastian and Indian River. Both very nice.

Good luck

To adjust the cast on a pattern stock, cut it with a bandsaw in the wrist on the side opposite from the direction you want to bend it. make the bend and glue in a wedge to hold it in place.
