Physdoc has once again kindly offered to post some pictures of the Owen after I disassembled, cleaned and mounted a Meopta 6x42 scope. The rear mount originally on the rifle was a Stith dovetail that had a screw that was frozen, so I sent it to Gunter Pfrommer to fix that and touch up the blue under the mounts. Apparently, the mounts were installed before the metal was originally blued, and it was bare metal underneath when I removed them. Anyway, now that it is all together, I have to say that it is the quickest handling rifle I have ever picked up. When you throw it to your shoulder, it is There. Anyway, pictures are forthcoming. Thanks, Sandlapper

Hello Sandlapper,

Your Owen rifle was most likely engraved by Alvin White. He engraved most Owen guns in the 50s.

Thank you very much for filling in a very large gap in my information on my Owen. The engraving on the .256 looks almost identical to mine. You have been most helpful in informing me about the engraver. Best Regards, Marcus

You're very welcome. Larry Wilson dedicated 75 pages to White in Vol II of The Colt Engraving Book. Really well done...the best of the best are in the book.

Take care

Turns out after taking this rifle to the range, I couldn't get any 140 grain or larger loaded cartridges to chamber. I tried chambering a new W-W empty and the bolt closed on it with no resistance. The rifle must be throated for a particular load, probably 120 grain bullets. No 120 grain factory 7x57 load was available in 1950, or now for that matter, so the owner must have been a handloader. Not sure about the rate of twist, either. Sandlapper
