What brand or type of checkering tools would you all recommend for a novice who wants to clean up old worn and clogged up with varnish etc. checkering.

Thanks,
John

Not many choices. Steve Earl Products or Ullman Precision.

It all depends upon how many stocks you plan to rechecker. Carbide tools are fantastic, but a bit pricey for cleaning up and repointing one or two stocks.

Here's a recent thread that discussed most of the currently available options. One poster said he recently acquired some checkering tools and sets from an estate, and will be selling them in the near future:

A bent rifler triangular file works best for cleaning checkering.

Yes, I find that for most clean and pick up jobs a bent triangle rifler works great. It does depend on the type of checkering that you are picking up though, flat top requires a different approach, as do some of the the other older profiles that were not cut with modern tools.
