No one here remembers the discussions about the revealing of the Greenbrier resort?

It stemmed from Congress crying out for greater transparency, and some citizens questioned why Congress should have a secret private bunker (for themselves and ALL their family members) that cost 100's of millions of dollars, hidden and off the books.

It was a matter of transparency, accountability, and equality.

As far as enjoying nicer places, well, it's a personal choice thing.
There are so many IRA, and 401k millionaires sitting around, living in paid off million dollar homes, that it is strangling the housing market.

For me, I'm going to sleep in bed bug free rooms, eat meals with more than 1 utensil, on glass plates, and shoot shotgun shells until they quit making them, and then I'll make my own.

You come into this world with empty pockets, and that's how you leave.

Had a few days at the Old Faithful Inn recently, and it was great. No shooting though, just trout fishing.

Kind of interesting to ponder from whom they were keeping it secret. Certainly, the Russians ferreted it out in a second and had a nuke dialed in for it. Its not like those blabbering congress critters could keep ot secret, and indeed, they did not.

The Greenbriar "Continuity of Government" bunker was top secret. It was even constructed during an expansion of the hotel to disguise its existence. After the Cold War (better name might be "World War-III" or the "45 year war" or the "Great Ideological War" or the "War between the East and the West" - pick your name), it became for awhile a relic like a battleship after WWII. We didn't think we needed it anymore. I think that might be why Washington Post decided to reveal it. WaPo likes to spy on its own government.

The hotel is beautiful and it has all the amenities of a mountain resort including clays. There are others, built on warm springs in the 1920's-30's the Homestead being one of them.

My last decade of employment was in New England and all six states there still have incredible hotels and inns. Only two, though, of the historic “Grands” remain: the Mountain View Grand...

...and the (Omni) Mt Washington ...

Though well beyond our budget we were privileged to stay at both. No shooting (unless you count a round of golf which I don’t) but stunning scenes wherever you look and beautiful streams in every valley. At the Mt. Washington part of each day of our week there was spent with a 2wt in hand because literally a “river runs through it”, the Ammonoosuc.

Well...if and when my wife and I are somewhat assured of smooth sailing (up to the end), a tour of all the old "Grande Dames" in this country might be in order. Most seem to drip with history and the settings (for the few I've seen personally) are simply hard to argue with.

It'd be fun to shoot sporting clays at such an establishment. I'm guessing that the Greenbrier may be that last one to offer such a form of "entertainment".

The staff will not be citizens of the US.
Many will have dark or yellow skin.
English won’t be the most common language you hear.

Many will be Asian students with a stipend that can afford to work the season at a resort.

Myself I like a “Bajun ” patois, because it sounds happy. Chinese staff can be very hard working and efficient, but come across as cold due to language skill and deferential behavior around guests.

You just have to roll with it.

Gorgeous!

Damn CZ, I don't understand you anymore. You been watching that rioting mess in LA? A sanctuary city wrapped in a sanctuary state that has been turned into a giant flaming shithole.

That cat with his face covered, standing on a burning cop car waiving a Mexican flag for the TV cameras looked like a proper rifle target to me (& I'll bet I wasn't the only person thinking that).

Lloyd, I was just pointing out for you that the fantasy and the reality within upscale resort facilities no longer matches “Leave it to Beaver” re-runs.

I figured I saved you a whole bunch of money, and myself the frustration of reading the latest agrievement.

On the undocumented immigration front, it’s not 1890, 1953, or 1980, anymore.

I view it as a problem solvable without military intervention.

Other’s don’t.

In what year was "Operation Wetback" undertaken? I'm thinking it was under the Eisenhower administration but I could be wrong.

CZ: I'm under no illusions about life at these resorts, I'm just admiring the effort it must take to maintain the high standards that they still seem to operate under and the wonderful architecture they support. I might also mention that everybody I encountered at the Greenbrier (that was working there) seemed to be locals, mostly middle-aged and older and very white. I'm sure there was a selection of more-diverse folks there as well (even as clients) but my visit was limited.

And as far as "my aggrievement" goes, it was "aggrievement writ large" that produced the results of the last election in this country. Too many Americans remember how wonderful this country was, even just a few decades ago, and said "no more".

President Trump is merely doing what he was overwhelmingly elected to do.
