Chasing ejectors & ran across this info:
>>A double gun should not be closed as though it were a manhole cover. The barrels and the stock each comprise about half the weight of the gun. When such heavy parts are slammed violently together, excessive stresses will result. Such treatment is a great cause of looseness. Close the gun gently. The lock work needs only a little instrument oil on the contact points of the limbs, at very long intervals. The double gun will not squirt oil in your eye if you overdose it, but the oil will drain down and eventually soften and rot the stock. The bolt and hinge should be lubricated with an oil of rather heavy body, as it will be kept between the working surfaces by capillary action without runnning where it is not wanted. And do not work on the selective single trigger yourself, or even douse it with....<<
I had always been told this & Miller had a similar opinion as well as not to carry the longarm open....
But most Brits I have been around did slam it shut like dropping a manhole cover in-place.....

Total weight is 2.85 Kg and the sling swivels just had to be installed when the weight of the tubeset was measured.
It is equipped with an automatic safety.

Is the receiver finish a result of plating or the composition of the steel? Some American Smiths and Foxes seem to suffer from the same tarnish.

No, there isn't any plating & I think you are correct that is simply tarnish.

........ Evidently, this one either escaped the greed of German confiscation, or was (indeed and literally) liberated in Germany three years later....... Anyone know how exactly the Germans confiscated ALL Sporting Weapons; how were they transported and where were they staged and deposited, i.e. stored destroyed? Hochachtungsvoll, Raimey rse

The tubeset initials of >>JT<< could easily be Jules Thonon who in February 1912 filed for trademark protection for >>Canons D'Armes a Feu<<, which is not on these tubes. Too, I assume the tube steel is John Cockerill - Seraing of Liège.
Of Course Joseph Thonon could be a suspect but I am not sure if he rolled his own?

I have seen pictures of some very high grade Galands. The only one I have seen in person is a single barrel 10 gauge I own. I am guessing the date at early 1870's based on a same period W&C Scott single 8 gauge I own. It is marked simply Galand - Paris.
Odd gun in that it is much heavier and longer barreled than the 8 gauge Scott, but only short chambered 10 gauge. It is configured like a market gun but not likely capable of large kills per shot, very different from the Scott which is definitely a pass shooting gun but made with no choke and shoots bore sized balls well. Workmanship and quality are very good. Barrel is an odd amalgam of octagon rear and round front with two different composites used. It includes a rear fixed sighting device and is a rotary underlever action. It is an interesting gun.

So Belgian sourced Jones Underlever? Typically that Jones Underlever is used for Stout Lock-Up.
