I see that Remington has taken over rights to import the Baikal shotguns and rifles. On the web site, it shows a side-by-side rifle offered in either 45/70 or 30.06. Very, very cool!
Has anyone seen one in person? I checked with the local gander mtn, and it's not stocked by the distributor. Any suggestions on how to get one (in 45/70 of course)???

Hi Nailcreek & welcome to to board,I am pretty new here myself. As to the sxs rifles I contacted Remington less than 2 weeks ago and was told that they expect them to be here late this year.I would not hold my breath on that though, seems that we hear this sort of thing a lot with new products.

There are apparently a few in Canada, as a poster on another board has one. No sightings south of the border yet as far as I know.

Well, I've emailed Remington and Baikal asking about the status of the rifles, so I'll report back if they reply.

I also check with the distributer I use and they said, nothing yet and unsure of when they are going to get them.. I thought I saw a press realease from rem saying the 30/06 was going to be first, then the 45/70. I want one too.

I did get a reply from Baikal this evening. They said that the 30.06 was currently available and in production, and that the 45/70 was awaiting government approvals to be imported. ***This rifle is made in the .30-06 chambering. The .45-70 GOV version may appear sometime later in 2006. The gun needsd certification for the US market. All the best, BAIKAL ***
I also received a reply from Remington ... stating that the rifles would be available at the end of the third quarter of 2006. **** Response (Howerton) - 04/03/2006 08:09 AM Dear Kerry: Thanks for visiting Remington Country! We appreciate your interest and support of Remington products. Based on current production schedules, which are subject to change without notice, we show the SPR22 available late 3rd quarter of 2006. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused!~ ***
So ... we'll see!

I have read at least one report of a 30-06 shooting off face within a few shots. May have been a random problem. Still too early to tell. Pete

There is a long report on Canadiangunnutz, but you have to subscribe to view anything there. Here is the url to the thread: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68092 There was one post in the thread about shooting off face, but is seems to have been deleted (or pulled or I am loosing it big time ). Still there are several folks who have the gun in 30-06 and are reporting on it. Doesn't make me want to run out and buy one. Pete

I did check back with Remington, and they are looking for a release date sometime in the 1st quarter of 2007 for the 45/70. No idea on price ...

I saw Baikal 30-06 allready here. Looks ugly, but strong. I guess the idea to use not rimmed ammo in cheap DR is not good. Actually personally I'd avoid not rimmed ammo in any break open gun.
