Daryl: My original response to your original post/picture is a good example how someone can seize on an off-topic bit of information that suits his own situation (Rose & Scroll in context of my AAH) and think one size fits all, because my premise was never tested. The more I tested the premise the more I found it wasn't so cut and dried as I once believed, possibly because others writing on the subject were not tring to distinguish one type of R&S from a different presentation.

This is why the case study method is used in law and business schools, so to a certain extent this forum sometimes resonates like a bunch of lawyers splitting hairs, but it's the best way to move along the learning curve. I'll look you up in Vegas. EDM

OWD it was imported by VL and D and was intended for export as it has "Made in England" stamped on the bottom of the barrels. I think the 2-3/4" chambers are rare in 20 gauges from that era. And it is a pleasure to shoot.

Daryl my degree is in engineering and a debater arguing over what the meaning of "is" is still dumbfounds me. And isn't what I posted always referred to as "Purdey Rose and Scroll Engraving" - as if it were a mantra?

Best,

Mike

Mike, yes, that's the way it's refered to . Probably not the typical, but so nice. You know, you are a lucky fellow to have "that" gun. Try to find another set up like that. ANNNND-----------just used enough to use.

Thanks. I hadn't seen this style before except on my Dickson (very similar) and had never heard a name for it.

Jim,
That's a great LC. The engraving is definitely above the average later LC's.

But, I think that lock screw is a replacement and the gun deserves a better one that fits well. LC often had some cross cuts on the shank end on the graded guns. Someone here was had some nice screws done for an good value, but I can't recall who now.

Rose and Scroll on a Belgian Guild gun.

Bottom of same gun. I call the circular flower pattern "Ring around the rosie." Every time I hunt with this gun I make sure I have a pocket full of posie before I go out.

Ken Hurst asked me to post this floorplate pic for him. He wanted to show a variety of "banknote" scroll on this thread.

Here ya go!

Chuck, I am certain the screw is wrong and I have some doubts about the stock. The gun is an 1894 A1, straight grip; however the guard tang is not the usual long one with a point. It is the original guard but appears to be a 2 screw P/G that has been straightened. Every thing else seems to be correct including the checkering and the inletting. The number is stamped under the guard in the wood. Hard to figure what happened in 1894. It also has the usual problem with the forend iron with the early ejectors. I keep looking for a replacement one , but they are like hens teeth. Someday maybe, if I should live so long.

Bob B,
I called it architectural because the pics are from a book of drawings that show all these do-dads for addition to buildings and rooms and the book is called Baroque Architectural Decoration.
