KY Jon: Mista' Buck would have been proud of you. It sounds like you got a fine gun at a great price. As you stated, you paid the seller's asking price with no negotiating. The seller was at least somewhat knowledgeable about guns and he was re-selling it at a profit. That's a level playing field if I ever heard of one. Methinks the naysayers e-mails smite of sour grapes (like they wouldn't have bought it had it been offered to them). Congratulations, messages like that keep us all looking.

A quick story on point: Many, many years ago an old friend and gunsmith, Vanderbilt Kirkland, brought out a mint Parker Trojan 20 and offered it to me for $850.00. Smart me I said: "How about $750.00 cash?" He quietly said: "No, it's $1,000.00" I bought it for $1,000.00. He told me and the moral of this story is: "When someone offers you something that you really want and at a very, very fair price, BUY IT!"

Best Regards, George

Sounds to me KY, while "driving home," you had to rationalize the deal!
People want to be treated fairly - let's see who bad raps unsavory dealers - both in past and future posts.

A bit green-eyed LG?
Mr Jon has the right to crow about a rare gun and the low price paid. His shoe leather, gasoline, and time spent to find such a bargain aren't inconsequential. It's all part of the old gun game.

I note that John said he was looking at another gun, while his friend was looking at this one. I did not get the impression he was scamming some poor widow out of her late husbands treasure. Perhaps the seller from whom he bought it is the one who should be ashamed, but he didn't seem to know what he had, so may not have been intentional. Obviously someone didn't know at some point, but I don't see how you can default KyJohn on his find.

I just spent 2 days at a gun show. Many of these "instant gun appraisal experts*" were wandering about with firearms priced right at full retail". I used to try and tell them that if anyone at a gun show wanted to pay full price they'd go to a retail establishment where they would also get some type of guarantee to go along with it. When you're buying a gun from an individual it's usually "where is as is" and often hidden defects are discovered after the purchase has been made. What may seem like a steal at the time of purchase may very well not be in retrospect. When you're buying 75+ year old guns as many of us here do you are taking this kind of risk and this has to be factored into the finances involved in the transaction.
Jim
*This means they just looked on the Internet or elsewhere, found the most pricy example of their gun and regardless of condition, priced theirs at that level or higher.

Lowell,

How should the transaction have been handled?

Jon,
Congrats on a nice find.

LG,
Next time I run across anything that I want that is offerred for less than "market value", I'll consider offering the market value.

Hell, I can prove he didn't pay too little. I wouldn't have even given a grand for it!

You didn't beat a widow and orphans out of a gun by telling them it wasn't worth very much? Phew!! You're a lot better man than I am. Then again, I've got Mad Cow. Ya know?.............Denny Crane
