This is improved modified. My old name won't let me log in, so I am writing as sage grouse until the problem can be fixed.
Just thought I would let the board know about my experience with HEVI-STEEL a couple of weeks ago. For years I have used high speed steel 1-1/8 ounce #2 shot. Sucess with it has been marginal. It usually took 40-50 shells to bag my limit of 7 ducks. Pattering showed the problem. There were holes big enough to let ducks fly right on through unharmed. I could do everything just right, lead, follow-through, etc, and still miss. For years I have known what the problem is, but had no economical way to fix it. I tried #4 steel and it would end up wounding more ducks than it was worth. I even went to 12 ga. 3-1/2 inch shells loaded with 1-3/8 ounce #3 shot. This proved somewhat better, but still disappointing. I have experimented with tighter chokes , Imp. mod. and just about everything else to get a dense pattern at 30 yards. I recently switched gears and bought HEVI-STEEL #6 shot and screwed in a skeet choke. This is a deadly combination! Instead of my usual 40-50 shells, I took 6 ducks with 13 shells. 3 one shot one kills, one three shot one kill, two two shot two kills and 3 misses. I don't claim to be an expert shotgun shot, but that is a lot better than 50 shells! Especially when you consider that 8 shots the National average it takes to bag one duck. So the word is out. For ten bucks a box more than premium steel you can get a vastly superior product. -IM
