I wasn't aware of this "gold star" until my sister sent the photo today. President Truman sent it to my grandmother in memory of her son Tom who I mentioned up thread. My mother gave it to my sister for her bracelet. Gil ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/Rhp4RK9.jpeg)

Really great post, Gene. Thanks.
Yesterday Ivisited a relatively new veterans' cemetery just a few miles from where I live. Quite a few Vietnam vets. Also some from Iraq and Afghanistan. Very nice setting in Wisconsin's North Woods.
Watched some of "Band of Brothers" when I returned home. For as long as I watched it, I didn't see a single BAR. From my early days in National Guard infantry, every squad had a BAR. Saw just about every other standard infantry weapon. Made me wonder why no BARs. The bazooka had been replaced by the 3.5" Rocket Launcher by the time I fired one of those. Much larger tube.

putting it all in perspective, war for the most part is a tragic waste...
long past time we figured out how to make it less deadly and destructive...
perhaps drones in the desert is the solution...
may the best machines and their remote operators win...
keep it simple and keep it safe...
