If there is polarization over gun rights, it resides precisely in the profound discomfort of some with the culture of Carlos Hathcock and Semper Fi gone to the defence of the idea that the private citizen should be able to own the "personal" armament of his choosing. Pursued to absurd lengths, such an idea would justify the private ownership of a "small" nuclear weapon by men of self-assessed moral probity, intelligence, and wisdom such as Mr. Taggart as well as by others who failed to fill in the form.
