The Mannlicher-Haenel New Model is a different rifle and action from the GEW '88.

I don't know anything about Newton's imports from Germany. But if he did import the Haenel New Model Mannlicher, it was a very nice choice.
A blend of Mauser 98 and Mannlicher, the rifles are not often seen. Even then they are often confused with the '88 as they have the same split rear receiver bridge.

I have 2 of the Haenel N/Mod Mannlichers. Neither a Newton!
One in 9mm Mauser. The other orig 9.3x57 I believe till someone ran a 35Whelen reamer into it for more power! Ouch!

There are 2 different Commercial Models with slight variation betw them. The bolt handles and the magazine floorplate release is the biggest give-away betw them. I don't recall what the Model designations were.
There were a couple of Military contracts filled using the New/Model/Mannlicher. One was for Paraguay I believe. Another for one of the other smaller countries in that region, can't remember the name now.
Occasionally one of the Military rifles surfaces.

Gotta get my 256 Newton rifle fixed up. One of these days..
