Cat, those are really Sauer's U.S. of A. Modell designations, I believe. But what separates the Sauer Modell Nr. 40E from the Sauer Modell Nr. 45 would be the tube steel, gold inlays & the piece of lumber. The 45 would have had the best piece of lumber that one could buy. Then the Sauer Modell Nr. 60(Meisterwerke) would wear embellishment atop that along with a skeleton toplever, etc. All had upper & lower hinged scears. This just off the top of my head and a guesstimate, but if we could equate the U.S. of a. Modells to the German inlands then we may have the full answer.

So....., I think the Modells 40E/45 is akin to the Modell Nr. XXVII and the Modell Nr. 45 would wear Special Krupp Gewehrlauf Stahl.

The Modell Nr. 60, for which you didn't inquire, would be the German inland Sauer Modell Nr. XVIII and would be Chopperlump.

Anyone else feel free to chime in.....(and correct me).

I would say the function & internals would be the same across the board but the embellishment would vary.
