If he had wanted to steal the gun he wouldn't have moved up and shot the next station with it, giving the owner ample time to find it, but would have beat it back to his ride and got the h--- out of there afap. As to how someone could make such a stupid mistake I have no answer, except for a byline of someone on this site (whom I can't recall) that says "Nothing is foolproof for a sufficiently talented fool".
