FWIW, I see a brass plate in the butt. I would guess a studio gun wouldn't have a brass plate in the butt. So, I'd venture a guess that the gun was JW's and likely a favorite of his for hunting. The brass plate might be an indication it was a gift, or he was one of those that had to put his name on everything. But in the scene where he shoots the rooster, you can clearly see the brass plate before he mounts the gun at 1:16:39 and when he breaks the gun in the following scene. At just after 1:18:06, where he breaks the gun and reloads, you can clearly see the plastic shell. It looks ribbed to me.
